It wasn't totally dark in the tight cocoon. Billie could see shadows and lights play through the fabric as she tossed and turned. She was in her own world and felt bizarre sensations sweep through her body. She pushed and pushed until the fabric that held her began to stretch; then it began to tear. Billie pushed her way out of her cocoon and stepped back into the world, feeling as if she awoke after a good sleep.

Indeed, Billie bursted with vigor. She stood disoriented from being taller than she remembered. She examined what changes her time in the cocoon wrought. Billie was entirely different than the hooded caterpillar that had gone into the cocoon. Now, her body was cut from a velvety, black fabric. The cloth appeared sewn to warp Billie's form to a slimmer waist and wider hips proportional to her added height.

While the cloth that now made up her arms and legs was black, her torso was made of a fuzzy lavender fabric. She felt like she wore a fur coat, except it was a part of her! Thin white gloves covered her hands ending at her elbows, and twin black antenna tipped with lavender pom-poms rose up from her head out of her similarly colored hair. The pom-poms bounced a bit whenever she moved her head.

Once she recovered from her astonishment, Billie glanced around the cutified courtyard afraid she might see more of the fairy that did this to her. However, she could see wing nor wand of the ethereal woman. Billie did notice something behind her and spun to see what it was. But, like a dog chasing her own tail, she only caught the barest glimpses of something racing away from her.

She was stopped by a small sound penetrating the air. She turned around fast to see what it was, and saw a resident that she recalled was a rocker girl who was a drummer in a local band. Garbed in a Rolling Stones t-shirt and the tightest blue jeans, the girl with curly Katty Perry blue hair had her phone out staring at Billie. The bookworm turned doll assumed that the guest was taking pictures of the strangeness.

"Who… What are you?" The rocker girl asked with wide eyed curiosity. Billie thought about it but didn't want to say her name, it sounded too plain in light of what occurred.

"I am the guardian of this toy garden." The life-sized doll replied with a clever little smile. Why that  particular name jumped to her mind she did not know.

The girl returned the smile, "Cool."

The girl took a few strides up to Billie to get a closer look at the butterfly, "You remind me of a toy I had that my grandmother made me when I was a kid."

Billie's smile went away and she took a step back from the young woman. She did not like that friendly, yet possessive glance, "Sorry hun, but I am not a toy."

The girl shrugged, "You sure look like one, Miss Papillion."

"Well I'm not," Billie replied with a pinch of defiance in her voice. She crossed her plush arms to look a little tougher in front of the girl, who was not impressed. Instead, she took a step forward and pinched Billie's arm.

"Last I checked people weren't made of plush and polyester."

Billie yanked her arm away. She felt the sensation of being touched, but no pain followed it, "Please don't do that."

"Why shouldn't I?" The girl retorted crossing her arms like a child denied a toy by her parents.

Billie stared at the girl, eye to plastic eye, "Because it's rude!"

The girl thought about that for a moment, and then nodded, "You're right, I'm sorry. I usually play nicer with my toys. I have not had any since I was ten. It's just looking at you fills me with nostalgia you know?"

"I'm not a toy." The butterfly toy restated, "Have you ever seen a toy walk and talk and think?"

The girl stood there for a very long second, eyebrows cocked and jaw a little agape. Then she held out her hand, "Come here, I want to show you something."

"What?" Billie said, looking between the girl's hand and her face.

"Just take my hand, Miss Papillion. I won't hurt you."

Billie believed her. She felt her reservation about this girl melt away, if only a little. She took the girl's hand savoring its warmth. The girl squeezed the white glove with a grin.

"Follow me." She said, and Billie did. The rocker girl noticed a drawbridge into a plastic pink palace and steered them both that way. The girls entered the place and the rocker girl looked around as if the muses were speaking to her.

The blue haired girl directed Billie to the mirror in the room, and Billie got a good look at her new body. She could not recognize herself. She was indistinguishable  from a stitch plush doll. She watched as she spread her majestic wings to their full width. Opening and closing them was as natural to her as bending her arm. She ran her fingers over her face and it made the soft squeak of silk rubbing silk. A few more rubs around her head notified her that she no longer had external ears under all her frizzy hair, but she could still hear.

"Wait! Wait, I am . . . or was . . . human..."

The girl crossed her arms looking to Billie as if trying to see the human underneath. She also seemed to have difficulty in that, "Huh, well how could that happen?"

"I don't know." Billie said a little exasperated, "Jessie was being, well, Jessie, and then there was this… blue fairy. And then I was," Billie motioned at her curvy cotton body, "Miss Papillion."

The girl tried to digest that barrage of information. She did not understand it. However, she ended up giving Billie a comforting hug, "I bet you are scared."

Billie frowned. Her only reminder of being human was her memories, "When it comes down to it, yeah."

"Maybe I can help." The girl smiled.

"How?" Billie asked feeling a bit reassured.

She shrugged but locked arms with the toy, "Let's figure something out together."

Billie returned the smile as the two left by taking the door that led out into the dorm hallway, "Okay, let's."

It surprised me that Billie's TF was already well underway! It should have been obvoius based on the words of the Blue Fairy I suppose. Also, very clever, having the bookwork turn into a plush butterfly!

Interesting and cute to read the narrative of struggling and escaping from the cocoon as something else!

With that in mind, the "Guardian of the Garden" business sounds like foreshadowing?

What part will the rocker girl play?
